In ancient biblical times, the history of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, forerunners of the Jewish people, were passed down verbally from generation to generation. Later, a new technology emerged, that of making papyrus scrolls that allowed the written Word to be penned. The Torah, the first five books of the Bible, was written and read from scrolls. In 1450 Gutenberg invented the first movable-type printing press which allowed mass production of written material, mind you, way before Henry Ford’s assembly line. Guess what was the first thing that rolled off the Guttenberg press? It was the Bible. History was made because now the common man could read the Word. That is how God communicates with us. “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God (Rom. 10:17).” But how should that impact us?
What we see and hear becomes a part of our minds and imaginations and is vitally connected to our mental and social health. An individual's mental and social health affects the entire community as individuals set the standard for common decency, quality of family life, protection of children, and proper elder care.
In todays culture many of our youth have difficulty communicating face to face and have equal difficulty forming real relationships. Depression is at an all-time high, as well as drug use, alcohol, sex, and of course, suicide. As Christians, our hope is in Christ, but are we telling anyone? “We have come along way baby” from the early Christians, and it is not good!
The gospel is not made real; instead, it’s entertainment!
In our churches, it’s hardly any better. We “outsource” our kids to public education, the Soccer Coach, the Sunday School Teacher, and the Youth Pastor. We compartmentalize our ministries. The seniors use the church bus to go to plays, and our youth go off on separate fun outings. The gospel is not made real; instead, it’s entertainment!
Our churches have become social clubs. According to Lifeway Research, over 66% of our youth (we’re talking those from church youth groups mind you) when they go off to college never return to church. And we wonder why our youth are the way they are! The seniors keep going to plays, and we pour more money into our youth groups. It’s the way we have always done it; in the last 150 years, that is, with slow gradual changes each year till now, drifting away from the biblical model of discipleship.
The solution: there is a definite link between preteens and seniors. They have a lot in common. Preteens are unsure of themselves and are trying to figure life out. Seniors are retiring and trying to figure life out all over again and what role they will play but with so much to offer their churches and communities. Our churches should be building inter-generational ministries connecting these two age groups. It’s called discipleship! Discipleship has vanished from our churches. All adults regardless of their age, as long as they are breathing, should be pouring their experiences as believers into our youth.
In summary, as Joan Rivers used to say, “We need to talk”. We have all sinned and come short of the glory of God (Rom. 3:23). We must repent for where we have failed, and the Lord will make the change, this time for good. That’s revival! That’s discipleship! Are you ready? The Holy Spirit is tapping on our shoulders. What will you do in your church? In your community? It’s up to you!
